How To Use Your GPS To Mark A Point
If you have successfully connected a high-precision GPS/GNSS device to Diamond Maps then you can mark a point on your map by simply standing over the point and clicking a button. Here is how you do that.
- Connect a high-precision GPS/GNSS device to Diamond Maps. See this article to find instructions for your specific type of GNSS device.
- As you walk down the street you should now see a yellow dot moving with you marking your position. Be sure to keep your phone/tablet within Bluetooth range of the GNSS device (ie 30ft)
- Stand over a point you want to mark
- Click the Draw button in Diamond Maps, choose the layer you want to draw on, and click the yellow GPS Point button.
- Type in any information about this new point in the form that appears and then click the "Add" button.
- Repeat this process to mark other points being sure to change the layer selection when appropriate.
- For online users running Diamond Maps in their browser these points are instantly saved to the cloud. Offline app users will need to use the Sync button to upload their map changes at the end of the day (or at whatever frequency you want). To sync your changes in the offline app click Menu, Offline Maps + Sync, then click the Sync button next to your map name.
Special GPS fields
When you mark a point using a GPS, Diamond Maps will automatically add the following fields to your layer to record information about the point.
- "Elevation" - the elevation of the point as determined by the GPS/GNSS device. If your GPS device has been configured with a geoid model and reports true mean sea level elevations then that is what is recorded here. But for less sophisticated GPS devices, ellipsoid height may be reported here which is not the same as msl.
- "GPS Time" - the local date and time that the point was recorded.
- "GPS Accuracy" - the accuracy, aka uncertainty, of the GPS/GNSS device at the time the point was recorded.
- "GPS Metadata" - additional data about the quality of the point.
